FedEx Expands Sustainable Aviation Fuel Use at Chicago and Miami Airports
Memphis, TN -FedEx has announced new agreements to source sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Chicago-O’Hare and Miami International Airport, marking a major expansion of the company’s SAF deployment across U.S. hubs.
The deals follow FedEx’s first major U.S. SAF purchase earlier this year, when the company secured over three million gallons of blended SAF from Neste for cargo flights out of Los Angeles International Airport.
Under the new agreements, FedEx will receive one million gallons of neat SAF at a minimum 30% blend from Air bp at Chicago-O’Hare, making it the first all-cargo U.S. airline to deploy SAF at the airport. In Miami, the company has begun receiving about three million gallons of blended SAF at a 30% minimum blend from AEG.
Karen Blanks Ellis, FedEx Chief Sustainability Officer, said:
"Each executed agreement signals to fuel producers that airlines are eager to help scale the SAF market. While supply still lags demand, we are encouraged by early signs of increased SAF production globally this year."
SAF is part of FedEx’s broader carbon neutrality strategy, which aims for net-zero operations by 2040 through a $2 billion investment in vehicle electrification, sustainable energy, and carbon sequestration. Modernization and efficiency measures helped FedEx avoid 140 million gallons of jet fuel in 2024 and achieve a 30% reduction in aircraft emissions intensity from 2005 levels, with a target of 40% reduction by 2034 and 30% of fuel from alternative sources by 2030.
Luiz R. Vasconcelos, President of FedEx Latin America and the Caribbean, added:
"This milestone shows that sustainability is a regional priority. From SAF deployment in Miami to electric delivery vehicles in Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Brazil, we are embedding sustainable innovation across our operations and contributing to our global sustainability strategy."
